Effects of irradiation on the mechanisms controlling the residual rate of an alumino-borosilicate glass

Abstract The alteration of a four-oxide alumino-borosilicate glass close to International Simple Glass (ISG) was studied in Si saturation conditions at pH 3, 7, and 9 using solution post mortem solid analyses. In particular, the study examined impact structural disorder on generated by swift heavy ion irradiation. It is shown that pre-irradiated altered three four times more than non-irradiated glass, depending pH. This increased can be attributed two factors: an hydrolysis speed Si–O–B bonds, which control dissolution under these conditions, less passivating layer. latter effect suggests retained first gel formed, means very low atom mobility during alteration. However, maturation tends mitigate detrimental radiation damages. These results will contribute development predictive residual rate model.
